Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising, the exhibition of works related to the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement centered on the Ha Jung-woong Collection
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising. Forty years have already passed since the democratic uprising broke out. We often refer to the age of 40 as bulhok, the age when we become free of doubt. This term refers to the state in which one is by no means at a loss or is free of delusions at the age of 40. It also bears the meaning that one has to find the coordinates for one’s life, untrammeled by desires and worldly affairs.
The Ha Jung-woong Museum of Art in affiliation with the Gwangju Museum of Art unveils Bulhok: Better Days Ahead, an art show featuring pieces from the Ha Jung-woong Collection to mark the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. The works to be displayed at the exhibition are mostly concerned with the pro-democracy movement. The pieces are interpreted by both artists from Gwangju and Jeonnam who directly experienced the movement and artists who indirectly experienced it through mass media and the international press.
The artists have interpreted a wide range of themes pertaining to the May 18 Democratic Uprising such as state violence, the deaths of innocent people, resistance, the sorrow of those left behind, victims seeking peace and freedom, and screams for freedom from various angles. Most of the works on show at this exhibition are from the Ha Jung-woong Collection while works by Lee Ung-no and Han Mook are housed in the Gwangju Museum of Art. The exhibition also displays archived materials that showcase aspects of the democratic uprising sensed overseas in collaboration with 5.18 Archives and the May 18 Memorial Foundation.
Along with this exhibition we intend to internalize and objectify the process of fact-finding and interpretation in regards to the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising and set coordinates for a new truth, democracy, human rights, and peace for the present as we witness the movement’s 40th anniversary.
