Time Cubism aims to take a media archeological approach in examining the aspects of new form and technology in art media. The rapid technological advancement in the digital environment has revolutionized every aspect of our lives as a whole in such a way that it has fundamentally altered our perception and cognition. The new paradigm that emerged with new media, and the changes it has triggered in our perception of time and space, laid the foundation for a new creative environment which produces very different aesthetic meanings from before. The topography of video art, built on this very foundation, also underwent profound changes over the years.
In the twenty-first century, advances in digital technology continues to fragment, complement, circulate, and coverge the linear passage of past, present and future in certain events or situations we perceive and experience in our lives. Today, the speed of the time, and the representation of time can be easily manipulated and fabricated through technology, rendering the existing temporality more flexible, while broadening our perception of the four-dimensional time. New media based on intricately evolved digital technology further provokes the manipulation and transformation of time, which in turn, is opening up new horizons for artistic imagination.
In the late nineteenth century, the pressures of social change driven by the development of scientific technology in the Industrial Revolution era fundamentally altered the human perception of three-dimensional space. In turn, this deconstruction and reconstruction of spatial perception directly triggered the birth of Cubism. Likewise, in the twenty-first century, the environmental pressures prompted by the breakthroughs in digital technology are fundamentally deconstructing and reconstructing our perception of four-dimensional time, and consequently, ushering in a new era of "time cubism" in contemporary art.
Time Cubism examines how the concept of temporality is evolving in the field of digital video art today, and shows how our perceptions, changes in psychology, and the flow of thought are triggered and reponded, letting experience a different dimension through time flowing in a new way than ever before.
