Each year the Gwangju Museum of Art (GMA) selects senior or late artists who have had a profound effect on both the national and local art scenes for its annual invitational exhibition in order to research and shed light on their artistic achievements. This year the museum unveils an invitational exhibition featuring Son Jangsup in retrospective form. He has forged his own distinctive art and contributed to minjung misul, also known as the people’s art movement, and the contemporary Korean art movement as a founding member of Reality and Utterance, a minjung misul group, and the first president of the Korean People’s Artists Association in the 1980s.

Contents

During his lifetime, artist Son Jangsup has displayed works that are projections of man, nature, and narratives in life using his critical view of social realities and cool-headed historical consciousness. Viewers can better understand the close relationship that exists between Korean people’s lives and their history and sense an expression of emotions toward these two aspects through his paintings. This exhibition features his oeuvre which spans the watercolors he did during his high school days in the 1960s to works of minjung misul in the 1980s and works capturing deity trees and the natural scenery of Geumgangsan and Dokdo that he has been producing since the mid-1990s. It will also include his new work, Modern and Contemporary Korean History.

His grave messages that bring to mind a gentle yet tough life, pain, and soul will potently move audiences. This exhibition is expected to serve as a valuable opportunity to honor the Korean art historical achievements of Son Jangsup, who was more passionate in living and working than anyone else, and review his art world. Also This exhibition will serve as an opportunity for viewers to be deeply touched by Son’s idiosyncratic historical landscapes.
