The Perspective of Artists is an exhibition that brings together works by Korean artists included in the Ha Jung-woong Collection at the Gwangju Museum of Art (GMA) that have relatively less been shown to the public.
These artists captured aspects of the world seen from their perspectives of modern and contemporary Korean history which underwent rapid changes. They demonstrate their artistic accomplishments through works produced from their own perspectives: perspectives from which they see their own identity in globalization and internationalization; perspectives they have as precursors and witnesses who have led history; perspectives from which they explore their surroundings; perspectives toward elemental values that remain unchanged; and perspectives toward a yearning for an ideal world.
This exhibition was made possible thanks to the collection of Ha Jung-woong (1939- ) who donated a large body of works to the GMA in 1993 not long after the museum opened. Ha is a businessman who made a fortune by his own efforts and a second-generation Korean-Japanese who has put the spirit of art patronage into practice as an art collector. He had a lot of interest in painting and originally wanted to become a painter but he was unable to do so. Instead, he succeeded as a businessman and became a collector of paintings.
Afterwards, he continued to donate artworks to the GMA in 1999, 2003, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2018. The Ha Jung-woong Collection presently consists of 2,603 pieces that he has donated thus far. They are mostly works by Korean-Japanese artists who suffered from discrimination amid distorted Korea-Japan relations while longing for their homeland and living with the pain caused by the division of their country.
This exhibition will serve as an opportunity to shed light on certain aspects that modern and contemporary Korean artists pay attention to. It will also look back on facets of our lives through some of their representative works that have been selected from the collection.
