Shin Hoyoon says that paper is the most universal and popular material that keeps the property innate to human being. He sees in the soft, warm and easily crumpling and tearing texture of paper the nature of human. The double material property of paper combines with the questions he has and functions as a clandestine metaphor. At first he cult each and every sheet of paper. Over different series of works, they became larger, embracing and implying different messages. He now constructs 3-dimensional and geometric forms more easily taking advantage of his skills in computer graphic and high-end devices. To produce more efficiently, he studied graphic tools and features of each program. It does show his earnestness.
Depending on where you see the work from, Shin’s works sometimes seem void. At some point, the distinction between surface and line is blurred, incapacitating the eyes of the audience. The existence and illusion become ambiguous. Traditional design, the artist’s imagination converging with new technology allows us to see individuals within the whole and individuals as the whole without excluding them. Just like organisms where parts constitute the system. It reminds us of ‘Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno(All for one, One for all)’ from Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. Not in a direct manner but with consistency Shin delivers metaphoric messages about our society, including those about individual and society, inside and outside and the rich and the poor. His consistency comes from his diligence and honesty.
In all ways, we are facing a transition and it is significant to think about the very foundation. Pursuing absolute beauty while carying messages for the society and curing, Shin is personally proving the role of artists. We hope to think about the artist's mission through Shin Hoyoon - Island of Paramita, the Young Artist Invitational Exhibition.
