The Ha Jung-woong Young Artists Exhibition – Light 2019 is designed to discover young artists who will become the future arbiters of Korean art and enable them to unfurl their art world. The Gwangju Museum of Art’s endeavor to discover up-and-coming young artists has undoubtedly derived from the Ha Jung-woong Young Artists Exhibition. Ha Jung-woong (the current honorary director of the Gwangju Museum of Art) played a significant role in institutionally running this exhibition for young artists and arranging a forum for systematically discovering and fostering them. Ha, who has donated a large body of works to the museum since 1993, emphasized that the discovery and nurturing of young artists should be systemized; he demonstrated his will with works donation forms. The Gwangju Museum of Art (GMA) addressed a creation of systems to support young artists with a capital function in addition to creating a role and policies to carry them out. This led to the museum’s decision to hold the Ha Jung-woong Young Artists Invitation Exhibition on an annual basis.
Launched in 2001, it has selected both domestic and foreign active young artists under 45 whose creativity and experimental qualities are prominent. From 2001 to 2018, 99 artists have been invited to the exhibition and have been very active either in the capital area or other regions, assuming a pivotal role in the Korean art scene.
The artists finally selected for and invited to the Ha Jung-woong Young Artists Exhibition – Light 2019 are Lee Won-kyoung from Daejeon, Lee Jung-gi from Gwangju, Lim Bong-ho from Busan, and Shin Jun-min from Daegu. The same standards for selecting artists as in pre-existing events were applied to this exhibition: artists who are under 45 and artists who have turned out distinctive experimental artworks. The age limit of 45 is meant to help select artists whose artistic spirit is more liberal and experimental and who have produced works with a higher maturity level. It is in no way meant to restrict participants based on physical age alone. We at the museum received recommendations from curators of other local museums at a curatorial meeting. The curators of the Busan Museum of Art, the Daegu Art Museum, and the Daejeon Museum of Art collaborated with us to make artist selections. The first 13 artists were selected through recommendations by each local curator. We then held a seminar to give an account of each recommended artist’s current activities and artworks. The final four artists were selected in consideration of their work characteristics and genres during a meeting with the GMA’s curators.
The artists invited to this exhibition have produced ingenious, distinct works of art with great passion in diverse ways. It is hoped that this art show can offer opportunities to grasp the new tendency of contemporary art and the passage of the aesthetic consciousness of our time. In addition, we expect that it will examine aspects of modern times that we have experienced through works of art on display at the exhibition that explore these young artists’ keen sensibilities.
